The Kalamazoo Humane Society works closely with Kalamazoo County Animal Services and Enforcement to provide shelter to dogs who would otherwise have no shelter, and are often not brought indoors during heat, cold or inclement weather.
Animal control officers refer pet owners to the Humane Society for assistance in obtaining a dog house and/or straw for their outdoor pet. KHS will furnish straw or a dog house to a pet owner lacking proper shelter for their animal.
Whenever possible, the Kalamazoo Humane Society prefers to obtain and provide the igloo-style dog house. The insulated design keeps temperatures inside moderate during harsh Michigan winters and hot summers. They are lightweight, easy to clean and come in various sizes. A door covering that can be affixed to keep the wind, rain and snow out may also be available.
There is a high demand for dog houses and the number of available structures is limited. As a result, there may be a waiting list to receive one.
