Local and State Animal Laws
Michigan has some of the best animal protection laws in the country.
The Kalamazoo Humane Society is an independent non-profit organization funded by grants and donations. We offer services that manage pet-overpopulation, as well as provide assistance and education to pet owners to improve the lives of animals.
Kalamazoo County Animal Services & Enforcement is part of Kalamazoo County Government. They operate the only stray animal shelter in Kalamazoo County and use tax-dollars to enforce any animal-related laws and provide programs to Kalamazoo County Residents.
The Kalamazoo Humane Society and Kalamazoo County Animal Services & Enforcement often work together to accomplish more for animals and their owners. Although we have two different purposes, we have many common goals, including improving the lives of animals in Kalamazoo County.
The State of Michigan and Kalamazoo County have laws and ordinances that govern animal welfare.
Animal Enforcement Officers, Conservation Officers and other law enforcement workers are mandated to enforce these laws. Cities, townships and villages may also have their own ordinances in addition to what the State and County specify.
